Under Donald Trump’s renewed mass-detention push, the number that should stop the country cold is: 31. That is how many people died in ICE custody last year: a two-decade high. Nearly triple the year before. Higher even than most of the COVID surge. Behind each number is a name, a family, and a government that insists everything is fine. It is not fine.
