America’s elite institutions may have decided that survival means craven appeasement. Ordinary Americans seem to understand that survival of democracy requires a fight. If our democracy survives this grim chapter in our history—and I’m growing more optimistic that it will—it won’t be because of our most powerful institutions. It will be because of ordinary Americans like you and me, simply standing up for what is right.
