There is something uniquely, historically grotesque about a sitting American president posting on social media that “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” and the stock market going up anyway.
Let that sink in. A man with his finger on the most powerful military arsenal in human history threatened, in writing, the annihilation of an entire civilization. Traders on Wall Street read it, shrugged, and bought the dip. The S&P 500 eked out a modest gain. Options markets showed barely a ripple of stress. Somewhere on a trading floor, someone updated a spreadsheet under the heading “TACO” —Trump Always Chickens Out—and waited for the rebound.
They were right, of course. Trump blinked. He always blinks.
