After months of political theater, a 43-day government shutdown, and endless speeches about “standing with working families,” Senate Republicans finished the year by doing exactly what they set out to do: blocking the renewal of Affordable Care Act subsidies and guaranteeing that millions of Americans will see their premiums skyrocket on January 1. This wasn’t an accident or a breakdown in negotiations. It was a deliberate choice, made by the same party that insists it understands “the struggles of ordinary Americans.”
