As I have said before, I am opposed to authoritarianism anywhere in the world. The case of Cuba is particularly painful because of the dictatorship’s longevity, because the rest of the world has “grown accustomed” to that crisis, and because, for ideological reasons, it serves the interests of many—for example, those on the right who profit from using it as a cautionary example—while others, on the left, turn a blind eye to the atrocities of the Cuban regime because the “revolutionary” symbolism serves their purposes, all of them overlooking the most important thing: the Cuban people’s right to emerge from the darkness of the dictatorship and enjoy the light of freedom.
